The MS Read-A-Thon: Reading to Help End Multiple Sclerosis

Whynter Lamarre, spokesperson

The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Quebec Division is happy to announce the 32nd edition of the MS Read-A-Thon. This event invites students in elementary and secondary schools across the province to participate in an enjoyable activity that gives them a chance to develop their philanthropic qualities while stimulating their interest in reading.

For the fifth consecutive year, Whynter Lamarre, a proud Member of the Canadian Silver-Medal Women’s Water Polo team at the 2006 Commonwealth Championships, has gladly accepted to be spokesperson for the MS Read-A-Thon. "I encourage all kids to sign up for the MS Read-A-Thon. That way, they’ll get a chance to discover the exciting world of literature while raising funds to contribute to a future without MS", says Whynter.

Schools that want to participate in the MS Read-A-Thon can register now. They will then choose a period of two consecutive weeks and encourage students to read as many books as they can and collect pledges for every book they read. Last year, more than 4,200 students from
76 Quebec schools read more than 24,000 books and raised close to $100,000! In this way, these children and teens will help to end MS by supporting research on multiple sclerosis and services for the 13,000 to 18,000 Quebecers with MS and their families.

By taking advantage of the early registration period, which ends on November 20, 2009, schools will get a chance of winning one of three $200 gift certificates from Scholastic Canada.
