Streak for MS

For Immediate Release - January 20, 2010

WINNIPEG – The MS Society, Manitoba Division will kick off the largest MS Walk in Canada with a streaking party. “Streak for MS” hopes to boost participant registration for the Manitoba Lotteries MS Walk and give people the opportunity to show their support for persons living with MS. For a minimum $5 donation to the MS Society, streakers will get a red clip-in streak put in their hair.

“Streaking is a way to get people to ask questions, to help participants generate more awareness about their participation in the Walks across Manitoba, and to ‘make their mark’ against MS,” says Provincial MS Walk Manager Shauna Jurczak.

The two-day event at Polo Park Shopping Centre promises fantastic prizes for Walk participants who register for the 2010 Manitoba Lotteries MS Walk on site. Hair streaking will take place at the Bay Court in the Centre on Friday, January 29 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, January 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Participants will also have the opportunity to register for the 2010 RONA MS Bike Tours “Biking to the Viking” and “Riding Mountain Challenge.” Winnipeg radio station HOT 103 will host a live remote on January 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The MS Walk is an annual fundraiser that takes place in over 160 communities across Canada. Locally, the Manitoba Lotteries MS Walk will be held in 9 communities across Manitoba on April 18 and 25, and May 16 and 31 with participation expected to top 6,000. Registration for the Walk is free. Last year, Manitobans raised over $814,000. For more information, visit www.mswalks.ca.

Speaking at this event will be HOT 103 radio personality Chrissy Troy and MS Society, Manitoba Division President Wendy O’Malley. We welcome media to attend for photo, video and interview opportunities on Friday, January 29. We also invite the media to participate! Speakers will start at 12:30 p.m.

Representatives of the MS Society, Manitoba Division will be available for interviews between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. A light lunch will be provided for the media.

Manitoba has one of the highest rates of MS in the world, with over 3,000 people in the province living with the disease. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord. It is the most common neurological disease of young adults in Canada. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 15-40, and the unpredictable effects of MS last for the rest of their lives. The MS Society provides services to people with MS and their families, and funds research to find the cause and cure. Visit www.mssociety.ca for more information on multiple sclerosis.
