Community Services Coordinator - BC Division and Yukon Division, Lower Mainland Chapter

21 hours/week, one year contract with possible extension

The MS Society, BC and Yukon Division is the provincial arm of a strong national organization whose mission is to be a leader in finding a cure for multiple sclerosis and enabling people affected by MS to enhance their quality of life. To support the mission, the BC and Yukon Division has a Division office and 10 Chapters in the province with fundraising activities that have shown significant growth potential.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Lower Mainland Chapter, the Community Services Coordinator will be responsible for the direct delivery of all Client Services Programs in assigned geographical regions of the Lower Mainland Chapter by telephone, within the office and/or through community visits. The Coordinator will provide direct service to people with MS, their families and community professionals. There is a community development component to the position based on the unique, individual needs of specific communities and additional duties may be assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide telephone based intake for the Lower Mainland Chapter region to provide education and support to persons with MS, families, community professionals and other community agencies. This includes:
    • Providing short-term support counseling to persons with MS, their families, friends, and caregivers
    • Providing referrals to community agencies for services and programs not provided by the MS Society
    • Providing advocacy
    • Supporting local self help groups
  • Organize educational workshops

Qualifications:

  • A relevant university degree in social services, health, rehabilitation, counseling or education preferred
  • Experience in the non-profit sector preferably in health or disability related fields
  • Experience in community development and the ability to establish working relationships with other community organizations in a variety of disciplines
  • Excellent verbal communication skills in person and on the phone; clear and concise written communication
  • Excellent supportive counseling and advocacy skills
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively as a member of a team
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency using MS Office and the Internet
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt easily to changing circumstances
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times and display sound judgment
  • Awareness and insight into disability issues affecting persons living with MS would be an asset
  • Valid driver’s license is required
  • Access to a reliable vehicle would be considered an asset

Location: Burnaby. Requires travel throughout the Lower Mainland.
