Brain/Neuro Plasticity and MS
featuring Dr. Paul Mendella, Psychologist and Dr. Avi Nativ of The NeuroGym®.
Date: Wednesday, January 27, 2010
Time: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
1826 Woodward Dr, Ottawa, ON, K2C 0P7
(please use the Ottawa Real Estate Board entrance)

The brain’s ability to act and react in ever-changing ways is known, in the scientific community, as “neuroplasticity.” This special characteristic allows the brain’s estimated 100 billion nerve cells, also called neurons (gray matter), to constantly lay down new pathways for neural communication and to rearrange existing ones throughout life, thereby aiding the processes of learning, memory, and adaptation through experience.

Dr. Mendella will review how cognitive functioning is often affected in multiple sclerosis. He will also speak about the concept of neuroplasticity - how connections in the human brain can change in response to different experiences, including injury. The relationship between neuroplasticity and cognition in multiple sclerosis will be discussed, including the role of neuroplasticity in cognitive rehabilitation.

Dr. Nativ, founder of The NeuroGym® will discuss his approach to physical therapy for individuals with neurological injuries/conditions through a synthesis of research findings in human motor learning and motor control, brain plasticity, biomechanics, physiology of exercise, and rehabilitation medicine.
